Natalia stopped for a photo on the ramp at KGIF Gilbert Field on Friday, August 14 — a Mooney single, N7022V, waiting behind her with its cabin door open in the sun. A few minutes later she was in the right seat, headset going on, ready for her first flight above Central Florida under a sky scattered with the kind of tall summer cumulus that build up fast on an August afternoon.
Wheels Up
Once she was buckled in, our volunteer pilot walked her through the basics — the yoke, the instrument panel, how the intercom lets everyone in the cabin talk over engine noise. Natalia followed along on the controls as the Mooney taxied out past the oaks lining the flight line and lifted off Gilbert Field’s runway into mostly clear skies.
From up there, the roads, rooftops, and lakes around Winter Haven look different — smaller, and somehow more interesting. That’s the whole point of a Young Eagles flight: for one hour, a kid gets to see the world the way a pilot does.
Back on the Ramp
Natalia climbed down from the Mooney still holding her headset, grinning. It’s a look we see often at Chapter 229 — the moment a first flight turns from something you were curious about into something you actually did.
