Saturday, August 29th, a line of stuffed animals sat wide-eyed on a table at the Winter Haven Public Library, waiting to find out if they had what it takes. By the next morning, every one of them had earned their wings.
We call it Stuffed Animal Flight School, and for one hour that Saturday at 10 a.m., kids and their stuffed animals came to the new Winter Haven Airport Campus to enroll. The pitch was simple: does your stuffed animal dream of flying? Do they feel the need for speed? Do they crave adventure? If so, it’s time for ground school.
Enrollment Day
Step one was picking the right candidate — not every stuffed animal has the right stuff. Step two sent kids and their new aviators to a mandatory orientation at the library, complete with a presentation and video previewing the training ahead, plus a hands-on activity for the whole stuffie family. Our flight school mascot, a pink flying pig in goggles and a leather flight helmet, was on hand for photos and high-fives before each animal said goodbye to its kid for the night.
From there, the stuffed animals were left in the care of our experienced team of aviation professionals for a rigorous ground and flight training program — right there on the ramp, tucked into the cockpits of chapter aircraft like N4057 and N7022V for a night of “training.”
Graduation on the Ramp
The next morning, families returned to Winter Haven Regional Airport between 10 and 11 a.m. to collect their newly winged pilots — and to see, and climb into, the very aircraft their stuffed animals had trained in. Under a “Congratulations” banner and a wall of balloons, dozens of stuffed animals sat waiting for pickup: bears, dinosaurs, a pink axolotl, a Baby Yoda, even a Sonic the Hedgehog, each one now officially a graduate.
Kids walked out to the aircraft on the ramp to reunite with their pilots, cameras out, stuffed animal in one hand and a graduation bag in the other. That’s the whole idea behind this one: a low-key, low-pressure first walk onto a real ramp, with real airplanes, that ends in a hug and a keepsake photo instead of a checkride.
